Key Changes to the UK Skilled Worker Visa: What You Must Know in 2026

    By AdminMay 25, 2026

The UK Skilled Worker Visa has undergone its most significant overhaul since the points-based immigration system was introduced in 2020. Driven by the May 2025 Immigration White Paper, Restoring Control over the Immigration System, sweeping reforms have taken effect in stages between July 2025 and April 2026. For anyone planning to work in the UK or any employer looking to sponsor overseas talent understanding these changes is no longer optional. The rules are stricter, the costs are considerably higher, and the consequences of getting it wrong are serious.

    • £41,700 New minimum salary threshold
    • B2 English level now required
    • RQF 6 Minimum skill level for roles
    • +32% Rise in Immigration Skills Charge

    1. The skill level threshold has risen to RQF Level 6

Perhaps the most impactful change is the raising of the minimum skill level required for an eligible role. From 22 July 2025, the role being offered must be equivalent to at least RQF Level 6 the standard of a bachelor’s degree. This is a significant step up from the previous requirement of RQF Level 3, and it has resulted in approximately 180 occupation codes being removed from the standard route.

It is important to note that this does not mean applicants themselves must hold a degree. The requirement relates to the nature of the role, not the qualifications of the individual filling it. However, employers must now carefully verify that any role they wish to sponsor genuinely meets this threshold before beginning the recruitment process.

Transitional protection: Workers already holding a Skilled Worker visa UK before 22 July 2025 can still extend their leave, switch employers, or change conditions using the old occupation tables. This transitional arrangement remains in place until 22 July 2028, provided permission has stayed continuous.

    2. The salary threshold has increased and compliance is now stricter

The minimum general salary threshold for most new Skilled Worker applicants rose from £38,700 to £41,700 per year on 22 July 2025. For new entrants — typically recent graduates and those switching from a student visa the rate increased from £30,960 to £33,400.

Critically, from 8 April 2026, sponsors must demonstrate that this threshold is met in every individual pay period, rather than simply across an annual average. This is a significant compliance shift. Employers who structure remuneration using bonuses, commission, or irregular pay cycles must now ensure that no single payslip falls below the required threshold, or risk breaching their sponsor duties. All salaries are calculated on the basis of a standard 37.5-hour working week and must be pro-rated accordingly for part-time roles.

The minimum skill level has increased from RQF Level 3 to RQF Level 6 effective 22 July 2025, while the general salary threshold has risen from £38,700 to £41,700 on the same date. The new entrant salary rate has also increased from £30,960 to £33,400 effective 22 July 2025, and the English language requirement has been raised from CEFR B1 to CEFR B2 starting 8 January 2026. Additionally, the Immigration Skills Charge will increase by 32% from its base rate in December 2025, and pay period compliance has shifted from an annual average to a per pay period basis effective 8 April 2026.

    3. English language requirements have risen from B1 to B2

From 8 January 2026, all new applicants for the Skilled Worker visa must demonstrate English language proficiency at CEFR Level B2 upper-intermediate rather than the previous B1 standard. This change also applies to applicants for the Scale-Up and High Potential Individual visas.

The difference between B1 and B2 is meaningful. B2 requires competence across all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Even highly capable professionals whose work is largely technical may find that their formal written English does not yet meet this standard. Employers are therefore strongly advised to factor language testing into their recruitment timelines well in advance of submitting a visa application.

Existing workers are protected: Applicants who are extending their Skilled Worker visa and who were originally granted permission at B1 level will continue to be assessed against the B1 standard. The higher B2 requirement applies only to those making initial applications.

    4. The Temporary Shortage List has replaced the Immigration Salary List

The Immigration Salary List (ISL), which previously allowed certain roles to be sponsored below the general salary threshold, is being phased out and will be fully replaced by December 2026. In its place, the government has introduced the Temporary Shortage List (TSL).

The TSL covers approximately 60 critical roles rated at RQF Level 3–5 below the new standard threshold that are experiencing genuine labour shortages. However, the TSL comes with important restrictions. Workers sponsored through a TSL role cannot bring dependants to the UK, and no salary discounts apply. These roles are time-limited, meaning they will only remain on the list beyond 2026 if the independent Migration Advisory Committee recommends their retention.

    5. Sponsorship costs have increased substantially

The Immigration Skills Charge the fee that UK employers must pay to sponsor an overseas worker rose by 32% in December 2025. For large employers sponsoring a worker on a five-year visa, the skills charge alone now amounts to £6,600. When combined with the visa application fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge (now £1,035 per year per applicant), and the Certificate of Sponsorship fee, total government fees for a single three-year Skilled Worker placement exceed £8,000 for medium and large businesses.

It is worth noting that the Certificate of Sponsorship costs are the responsibility of the employer and may not lawfully be passed on to the individual worker.

What lies ahead: further changes on the horizon

The pace of reform shows no sign of slowing. From January 2027, the Graduate visa duration will be reduced from two years to 18 months for most holders, with PhD graduates remaining eligible for the full two-year period. The English language requirement for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) is also set to rise to B2 from March 2027, affecting those planning a long-term future in the UK.

There are also indications that the standard path to settlement may be extended from five years to ten years for most migrants, representing a fundamental shift in the UK’s approach to long-term work-based migration.

    Key takeaways

The changes introduced between 2025 and 2026 represent a fundamental reset of the UK Skilled Worker route. A higher skill threshold, a tightened salary floor enforced at every pay period, a stricter English language standard, and sharply increased sponsorship costs have all combined to raise the bar considerably for both applicants and employers. Anyone with plans to apply or to sponsor should verify current occupation eligibility on the GOV.UK Appendix Skilled Occupations list and seek advice from a regulated immigration adviser before proceeding.
